Youth Summit

Brittany Lauga MP invited students from secondary schools in the Capricornia area to participate in a Youth Summit. The summit was to provide the students with a voice for their ideas to be heard in State Parliament about issues pertinent to the local area.

The issues discussed were:

• the environment,

•  education, jobs,

• democracy and

• community engagement.

To offset the student discussion Brittany had arranged for motivational speakers to talk to the students they included: Dr John McGrath PH (Environmental Science), Kim Harrington CQUniversity’s Associate Vice-Chancellor for the Rockhampton area and Chris Tamwoy 2015 NAIDOC Youth of the Year.

The speakers spoke of their passions in life – John - the environment, Kim – education and jobs and Chris setting goals and achieving in life. The students were attentive and receptive to the ideas and inspirations from the speakers. They asked questions, and interacted well with the speakers and various other professional people who were in attendance at the summit.

Our students were excellent ambassadors for the school! They wore their uniform proudly, were well mannered and polite and entered into the spirit of the summit and participated in all the activities. They went beyond what was expected of them by clearing the table of all rubbish and then stacking their chairs before they left.

Students who attended were: Year 12 – Brodie Howkins, Lachlan Preece. Year 11 – Tanisha May, Corey Edmonds, Sarah Coker, Felicity Finlayson and Steven Kyriazis.
