Gladstone Science and Maths Challenge

Early Friday 16 October, Mr Atkinson and four keen Year 10 students, Sarah Coker, Steven Kyriazis, Corey Edmonds and Felicity Finlayson departed for one eventful weekend at the 2015 Gladstone Science and Maths Challenge. Held at Central Queensland University, the three days involved lectures and career talks from various fields; team activities and a problem based learning project for groups of approximately seven students and their mentors. There were five different projects, some of which involved tracking the Sun’s light, or the brightest light in a room, with a solar panel; designing a sustainable house; and researching ways in which to improve the performance of a solar concentrator. At the end of the three days, each group presented their project to a theatre of parents, teachers, principals, industry reps and fellow students. All students would agree that the weekend was fun, educational and a different way of learning and using the things learnt in the classroom. In preparation for University, students even had the chance to practice their waitressing skills.

Thank you very much Mr Atkinson for giving up your weekend to provide such a great opportunity for anyone looking at careers in Science, Maths or Engineering.
