Class of '61

28/04/2016

55th Year Reunion of the NRSHS Class of 1961

It was a great privilege for me to spend last Friday with ten students of the class of ‘61 students and their spouses. Mrs Ronda Nix, née Frainey, initiated the school reunion and fortunately the date selected coincided with our Anzac Day parade.

Things got off to a pleasing start when seven of the Class of ‘61 attended the school ANZAC parade at 10am. Their response to the ceremony was very positive and they commented on how well our students behaved.

Following the parade, the past students, Mrs Janet Young, Mrs Kylie Butler and our current student leaders enjoyed a bountiful morning tea which was held in the Trade Training Centre. During morning tea three more members of the class of '61 arrived and even after 55 years I witnessed the recognition in their faces as they greeted one another. Conversation and laughter flowed freely and it was a delight to see the interaction between the present and past students. The Class of '61 were students again, except with laughter lines instead of pimples and some with a little less hair.

By witnessing the reunion between these friends I discovered that school friends are unlike any other people in your life. No matter who you think you are or who you’re trying to be, your schoolmates know your history. It's was lovely to hear them swapping tales and laughing at each other’s stories and past antics.

Our visitors were impressed with the display of past school uniforms, books, photos and memorabilia provided by our library archives. This stimulated many memories and provided hours of reminiscing and entertainment.

After a delicious lunch, prepared by Gaye Sands and her team of helpers, our junior leaders, Renee Hodda and Victor Churilov, took the members of the class of '61 on a tour of the school.

It was fascinating to hear about the beginnings of the school and what the expectations were 55 years ago. I was sorry to see the day come to an end and extended to them an invitation to come back to visit our school for their 60th reunion.
