HOME ECONOMICS

Promoting the well-being of individuals and families in the contexts of food, textiles and living environments is one of the aims of the Home Economics department.

The Home Economics faculty offers students from years 8 – 12 the opportunity to study subjects such as Food, People and Technology, Textiles, Early Childhood Studies, Hospitality Practices and Home Economics. Students in Year 8 will experience an introductory unit of Home Economics which includes both practical areas (sewing and cooking). They may then elect whether they continue studying this subject. Students in the Senior school have the choice of three subjects: Home Economics, Hospitality Practices or Early Childhood Studies.

Home Economics staff undertake many professional development activities in order to maintain currency and relevance of subject matter.

Social Science Faculty

The Social Sciences start with Study of Society and Environment and articulate into traditional senior subjects, such as History, Geography, Economics and our new Authority Tourism program. We also have our multi award-winning VET Certificate II and III Tourism programs. There is a heavy emphasis in most of these subjects on learning outside the classroom in the environment or industry. We are primarily responsible for educating for citizenship, democratic values and multi-cultural traditions.

By the end of Semester 1 Yr 8 all students have completed 1 term. All students must complete a minimum of another 2 semesters, either (Yr 8 Semester 2, Yr 9 Semester 3) or (Yr 9 Semester 4, Yr 10 Semester 5) but may also choose 4 semesters. Students intending to do a Senior Social Science will do a preparation semester, (Yr 10 Semester 6).

SCIENCE FACULTY

The study of science not only enlightens students about the nature of the world around us, but also provides students with skills which are transferable to any facet of their life.

Science education develops an awareness of the intricacies of our world (and beyond) and the problem solving and analytical skills developed by students will be used by them in the future whether or not they pursue a scientifically based career.

Currently students must take Junior Science from Year 8 to half way through Year 9 (3 semesters) and then they have the choice as to whether they would like to continue with a further 2 semesters of Science. In Semester 2 of Year 10, students may choose to take courses that prepare them for the Senior Science subject options.
For senior students our faculty offers the study of Biological Science, Chemistry, Physics and currently Multistrand Science (this subject will not exist in a couple of years time and will be replaced by an alternative option). All four subjects are authority based subjects (count towards their OP) but we are exploring the options for offering other science based subjects in senior which are competency based.

The Science Faculty constantly reviews and evaluates the courses of study not only to ensure we offer a curriculum that interests and challenges our students, but also to help students develop as life long learners.

STUDENT SUPPORT

This department consists of the various support staff and teachers who have taken on a specific role in supporting our students.  We have a Guidance Officer, a school Chaplain, a Community Education Counsellor, a Youth Worker, a school Nurse and a School-based Police Officer.  We also have a behaviour management specialist who visits each week.  The Youth Pathways program operates in our school each week to assist students who are at risk.  We have 5 Year Co-ordinators who work tirelessly to assist students in their year levels.   My role is to co-ordinate the support services in the school and to oversee the smooth operation of our behaviour management system, the Responsible Thinking Process.

Support staff work together to assist students with home situations, with relationship and peer issues and with educational progress.  It is very much a team approach.  We are always happy to hear from students or concerned parents and will do our very best to assist in any way.
