VISUAL AND PERFORMING ARTS FACULTY

Visual and Performing Arts (The Arts) encompasses those artistic pursuits that express and communicate what it is to be human through dance, drama, media, music and visual arts. Through these distinct and separate disciplines, students can develop and share understandings of themselves, their cultures and their worlds. The Arts, separately and collectively, can balance and enrich students’ experience by fostering unique and significant knowledge, skills, processes and attitude that are transferable to other areas of learning.

In the Middle School, The Arts Faculty offers the subjects Art, Drama and Music to creatively extend students. In Semester 6, media is introduced through the subject Introduction to Film and Television/Media Studies. This will prepare students for Senior learning in the subjects Film, Television and New Media, and Media Studies. Semester 6 also sees the inclusion of Visual Art Studies/Craft which is a predominantly practical subject with a focus on design and production. Due to an increasing demand for vocational education subjects in Years 11 and 12, Media Studies and Visual Art Studies/Craft provide students with opportunities to develop skills in these areas without the challenge of academic rigour, with a view to providing career opportunities, as well as preparation for leisure time.

In Year 11-12, this faculty offers Visual Art, Drama, Film, Television and New Media, Music and Music Extension (Performance) to prepare students for Tertiary Education. These subjects offer a depth of study and challenge to students, preparing them not only for a continued course of study after Year 12, but also for the workforce and life. The Arts encourages students to broaden their horizons through problem-solving, risk-taking and “thinking beyond the square”.

With technology forever changing, The Arts educators at this school regularly attend professional development to keep abreast with current trends. Resources and equipment are annually upgraded to provide the necessary infrastructure to provide a sound, contemporary level of teaching practise to our students.
